Getting the best out of your bathroom designs
Landscaping May 29th, 2009Many home owners want to renovate their bathrooms to make them larger or to give them a more comfortable feel. You may not be able to knock down a wall or otherwise make your bathroom larger, but there are things you can do to make it seem bigger and more open.
Most people have small bathrooms, and what they use them for is very specific. Smaller baths are more intimate by nature, but most don’t use them as a place to unwind. Most baths are strictly utilitarian, designed with a minimum of “fluff” and a maximum of efficiency.
Most design principles that work in the rest of the home will work here, too. Reduce clutter and add style by replacing your vanity with a smaller, more stylish countertop and a pedestal sink.
Cut back on stuff that sticks out too much. Eliminate towel racks, shelving, and decorative accents that protrude, because they just take up space. Doing this will make the area seem more open and airy.
Most bathrooms are of a limited size, so if you want yours to seem bigger, you need to work with your lighting and choose a cheerful color for your paint scheme. Eliminate shelving and towel racks that protrude, and you’ll be left with a more open, expansive feel.
Painting walls in a neutral shade like gray or white will make the room seem more open. Also, you can add the illusion of height by choosing wallpaper that’s vertically striped or you can arrange tiles from ceiling to floor. Adding a border at the top of the walls will draw the eye upward and make the room seem taller.
Your bath will probably never get any bigger, but you can give the illusion of size by utilizing certain lighting fixtures and painting the walls in a bright, airy color. You may not be able to knock down a wall or otherwise make your bathroom larger, but there are things you can do to make it seem bigger and more open.
