Custom Closet Designs in Miami FL: Homes With Better Storage

Posted by Dan Bannan on October 15th, 2009

Anyone looking to add to their closet design by adding different types of storage devices will find there are lots of options. From very basic storage solutions to custom-designed creations, there are a lot of ways to go. Choosing what to use will depend a lot on the closet in question, the space and what needs to go into the closet.

To achieve a practical design and a good closet system for your pantry, you need a little planning. Through this, you can choose the type of things that should be placed in the pantry. The closet for a food pantry, for example, should have drawers for sauce mixes and spices, and specialized rotating apparatus for canned goods. But if you need a closet for a combination pantry, the design should be a bit different.

Linen closets - To maximize the space for this type of closet design, or at least provide better, neater storage, there are some options. Compartmentalized shelves can make it much easier to keep wash clothes, pillow cases and other small items sorted. Large rubber tubs or other similar devices can work great at the bottom of a closet for holding blankets and other big items. Regular shelving tends to work best for towels and sheets.

Eliminate everything that does not belong to the pantry. The items that do not fit in your pantry should be removed ruthlessly and placed either to the right closet or to the trash bin.

Improve access. Since the pantry closets usually have deep shelves, employing sliding shelf organizers or roll-out drawers can help you easily find what you’re looking for. Having roll-out drawers means no more poking around for the things placed to the back of the shelves.

If you have a window near where you are planning the closet design, you should keep in mind that if you can see out, others can see in. You will want the windowsill to be at least 3 feet from the ground, if not higher.

Hall closets - Shelving units often come in handy in this type of closet design. If things such as sports balls and other similar items need to be stored, this can be one of the best ways to go.

A pantry closet design that’s efficient enough can truly turn an unorganized pantry into a neat, attractive and very functional spot in your home. By making items in the pantry easy to locate, a well-organized closet will save you not just time but also trouble and annoyance. Moreover, if you have a functional closet, you won’t be shopping for things you already have, but can’t be located.

How To Build Low Budget Wooden Sheds

Posted by Bill Richardson on October 15th, 2009

Don’t have a lot of money to build a wooden shed for your backyard? No problem. The process for building wooden sheds is easy and worth the extra effort you put into it. Inexpensive wooden sheds are well within reach if you have a basic carpentry skill set.

Let’s start with assessing your needs. Will your shed be used for storing your tools or riding mower? Or will you be using it as a backyard retreat that you’ll furnish and decorate?

Another one of your first considerations will be its size. This is easier to determine once you have decided what you will be using it for.

Now you are ready to do some online research. A good place to start is to do a search for images of wooden sheds. You will be able to find hundreds of photos to get an idea of what would work and look best to you. Then, once you have a few examples picked out, search for a set of plans that you can download online. There are a few you can obtain free but there is a wide selection of plans available for around $5.00US.

For materials, wood pallets make a great option. Complete sheds have been built from the boards used to make pallets. You can purchase them used for roughly $4.00US. Or better yet, with a little research, you can get them free. There are companies that throw them out to be recycled. I found one close to where I live that had seven of them. All I had to do was ask and they were more than happy to let me have them.

Of course, by using the wood from pallets, you’ll have to modify how you use the plans but its a great place to start. And, almost everything from the door to the floor and walls can be made by using the wood from the pallets.

If you’ve done your homework, its conceivable that the only items you’ll have to buy are the shingles, hardware and paint. Fortunately, even the shingles can be found a reduced prices if someone has overestimated a project and has extra you can purchase.

So you see, your “new” wooden shed is really just a weekend or two away if you use a little resourcefulness.

Why Pool Deck Resurfacing Might Be the Right Choice for You.

Posted by Jason Stepferd on October 15th, 2009
by Jason Stepferd

When it comes to designing a backyard pool getaway, many people need to choose between their favorite design choice and the one they can afford. In prior years, your choices were limited; in terms of affordability, the best options were concrete or concrete stained for color.

Until recently, options that improved the look were incredibly costly and pool deck resurfacing was equally as expensive. With some advances in concrete engineering, this has changed.

By using properly engineered concrete or concrete and polymer mixtures, a layer as thin as a credit card can be applied to an existing pool deck, transforming a backyard getaway into the one that the owner originally envisioned, rather than the one they settled for. The products available are affordable and many are designed for super quick drying time, allowing a home owner to upgrade the pool deck in as little as a day.

These products are incredibly flexible as well. For instance, if a home owner wanted the look of stone, there are systems that will allow the installer to stamp or stencil the concrete, giving it the look of stone.

If the pool deck area was previously known for its slipperiness, slip resistance can be added. As technology continues to improve, more companies are offering the products you need at an affordable price.

Pool deck resurfacing can be done to any concrete pool deck that is free of major cracks or other major structural issues. Typically, the surface is prepared with a rough buffing to help the resurfacing material better bond with the original structure, then the concrete and polymer mixture is applied. Some systems have the installer apply the material with trowels, other systems are sprayed on. Many of the spray-on systems are self-leveling, meaning they do not need to be smoothed with a trowel as they will do this on their own before beginning to setup.

The products that are used for resurfacing a pool deck are incredibly durable and are designed to withstand years of abuse from abrasion, UV exposure and swelling and contracting of the concrete due to temperature or humidity. On top of this, these products are engineered to withstand years of being in a pool area, including being resistant to pool chemicals, including the most modern salt-based systems.

A growing trend for some new pool installs is to use a resurfacing method to add pizzazz to the pool area. It is far cheaper to have a basic slab installed, then a thin layer of artistry added rather than doing all of that work to the stab itself. Pool design experts will recommend this if they feel it will save you money and them time on the job.
