Fashion Tips for Home Decor

Posted by Dirk Williams on October 16th, 2009

Over the years I have become keenly aware at how a persons individual style for fashion does not always spill over into the way they decorate their homes. I have met several people in my lifetime that I like to refer to as Fashionistas who have a great style for fashion and are always up “to-date on the latest trends and they usually have to have an excellent job or career to go along with those fashionable tastes. With that said, those same people have invited me over for a dinner or just to visit and I walk into their homes and I am completely shocked at the lack of attention they give their decor or the out-dated way they have decided to decorate.

I am the last person who will judge a person based by what they wear or what their home looks like, so I do not want you to misunderstand what I am saying when I make that previous statement. It just comes as a shock when you see someone who is so into fashion neglect the fashion of their own home. There are also others who think they have a flair for home decor but really do not have the first clue as to some of the dos and do nots of home decor.

This article will focus on some of the fashion rules that you should follow when choosing the style your home is going to present to the people who live there and to your guests. I would have to say that first rule of home fashion is to make sure that you purchase at least one piece of furniture that is going to stand the test of time, such as your dining room table, an oriental rug or area rug or something antique like and armoire. Area rugs specifically will add just the right touch to any room without overwhelming the room with a cluttered feel and an area rug is also a great accent for any room that has a high traffic area to be able to protect the flooring underneath.

Instead of keeping every room in a neutral color, you need to spice things up a bit and add some brilliant colors to certain rooms of the home such as a bedroom or breakfast nook. This will take away the constant need to redecorate or add too much clutter to a room to spice it up when you get bored with it. Taking the time to initially add bright color to a room will keep you satisfied for a very long time.

Using the right type of lighting in each room is going to make a major difference in the feel of your home. If you have a large living area, for example, using two floor lamps or two end table lamps to light the entire room is not going to give the proper light, nor will it do the room justice. Instead you should opt for track lighting in large rooms or even recessed lighting.

When you are ready to get caught up on fashion for your home and are ready to start to decorate or re-decorate, do some online research or pick up a home decor magazine and you will be sure to find some great ideas and even some ideas that with a little bit of your own imagination, you can expand on.

Roof Gardening

Posted by Jason Myers on October 16th, 2009

Roof gardening is a form of plant cultivation that is carried out on top of a home or the building’s roof. Terraces as well as balconies can also be utilized.Different types of farming may be undertaken; flat floor crop growing or flat bed, vertical farming which makes use of walls by creeping plants and danging pot gardening. Consider the hanging gardens of Babylon!

Why Roof Gardening? As force on land keeps on increasing specifically in metropolitan areas, roof gardening becomes an option. Different reasons include improving architectural and decorative designs, temperature regulation, own fruit and vegetable source, habitat for little insects, bees, butterflies, birds, and lizards, amongst others.

Roof planting offers amazing recreational openings, not only as a leisure pursuit and diversion but encourages personal movement and exercise while taking care of the garden. It not just promotes greener areas but allows efficient waste and water recycling, therefore effecting environmental preservation. Green plants help to arrest excess carbon dioxide brought about by automobile and industry which causes global warming.

Consideration of the weight of the soil should be based on the power of the building’s floor slab. If you intend to create your own house, let the architect and the engineer know that you would intend to practise roof farming. Lighter soil types must be utilized, such as peat moss as well as soil rite. If these are unavailable, try a mixture of garden soil (50%) saw dust (30%) and sand pebbles (20%), such a soil mixture is not just lightweight but additionally increases water retention and root expansion You would never want damp conditions on your roof. To allow excess water to draw off, put a coating of water-resistant bitumen on the floor.

Throughout construction phase, water-resistant cement must be used on the floor. However, you may place burnt bricks (2″x4″ inches) next, place a net lawn on top to maintain soil on place. If the area is large, place pipes along different spots that lead to the major drainage holes and make sure they are covered by the soil. You may additionally be creative with covers to keep off heavy rains from ruining your crops, as well as the hot sun.

Process Of Pouring Concrete

Posted by Zach Jacobs on October 16th, 2009

In order to get the best possible results when doing cement work, you should have the right concrete tools. Those who have done concrete work using the wrong tools know how hard it is to do that kind of a cement job.

In your preparation for a concrete pour, often times you will need to pull out old concrete where you plan to pour new. A diamond saw blade is a great tool to have in this case. It will not only allow you to cut the concrete so that you can remove the old stuff a lot easier, but it also gives you a flat edge to pour to.

After you remove the old concrete, it is time to prepare the ground for the new concrete. If the old concrete sunk and that is why you are replacing it, then you may need to add some base and do some major compacting work to make sure that the new concrete does not have the same problem. Once the ground is prepped, you then will need to place concrete forms. When forming, it is always better to use too many stakes rather than not enough. If you try to skimp by, you may find a form bulging from the weight of the cement during the pour, causing the concrete to not have a straight edge or a weird curve to it. For some concrete pours, you will also need to place rebar in the concrete area to reinforce the cement. When pouring the concrete where the rebar is, you will pour a little over it, then raise it up and let it sit on the bottom of the concrete and then pour over the top of it. The goal is to have it in the middle of the concrete as much as possible.

Before the concrete truck ever shows up, you should have preparations in place. Think about how big the pour is and if you will need help from family and friends. Will you need wheel barrows to haul concrete or can the truck reach the pour site? if the truck cannot reach the pour site is the job large enough to justify getting a concrete pump truck. Most importantly, make sure that you have and know where all of the tools needed to finish the concrete are.

When you get close to being ready, you will be able to call the concrete place and schedule the pour. Be ready to tell them how many yards of concrete you need them to bring. It is best to pour early in the morning if you can so that you have the whole day to finish the cement.

Once the truck arrives, it is time to go to work. The driver will want to know what slump you would like. This essentially refers to how runny or wet the concrete is. The wetter it is the longer you have to get it in place and worked, but it will also take a lot longer to set up. If you do not want to be there all day you can have the driver make it stiffer so that it will set quicker. If you are going to do this you need to make sure that everyone is moving quickly to get the concrete down and in place so that you can start to work the concrete as soon as possible.

The first step in working concrete is to make it level to the forms. This is done with a screed, which is usually a 2X4 board that is moved back and forth over on the top of the forms to scrape and move any concrete that is above the height of the form. Next, you will need to have someone working the float to bring the cream to the top.

Another person or two will follow the person doing the float and will work the top edges of the concrete to put a rounded edge on it. A person follows them with a trowel to work to smooth the lines made by those edging the concrete. The process continues several times over, working to make the top of the concrete as smooth as possible.

One of the most under utilized of all concrete products by people who do not do cement pours all of the time is diamond saw blades. However, it can be one of the most useful tools in saving time in cement pours.
